Difference between the capillary column and packed column
The major difference which distinguishes the capillary column or packed column depends upon its mode. When we talk about the packed column, in this the stationary phase is totally packed inside the cavity of the column. On the other hand, the capillary column is when the stationary phase is coated with the inner surface. Packed columns are usually used in the process of liquid-liquid extractions. On the other side, capillary columns are used in case of gas chromatography.
Both Packed columns, as well as the capillary column, are used for two different mechanisms. Their working is absolutely different. But the similarity is both of them uses stationary phase while chromatographic extractions. We all are aware of the fact that stationary phase is usually known as fixed phase while in mobile phase components are carried from one place to another.

The differences between Capillary GC Columns or packed columns are distinguished on the basis of their features. In simple terms packed column contains stationary phase i.e. fully-packed; it is created with the help of finest particles. You can easily signify the type of column with the help of its length. Packed capillary columns are usually short in length whereas capillary columns are quite long.
5. Diameter of columns:
The diameter of your packed columns varies up to various millimeters. Capillary columns diameter is around 1 mm.
6. Different Column Efficiency:
The efficiency of a packed column, as well as the capillary column, is also different. It can be measured as packed columns have low efficiency. In the case of capillary columns it is absolutely different; efficiency is high.
7. Resolution of capillary column and packed column:
When we talk about packed columns; it has poor resolution and on the other hand higher resolution of capillary columns.
8. Cost of both the columns:
Capillary columns are expensive whereas packed columns are not
9. The polarity of the capillary column and packed column:
Packed columns can separate non-polar samples easily as their tube is made up of stainless steel. The capillary columns are used for reliable separation methods; for polar samples, the tube is made up of glass.
10. The ruggedness of both the columns:
One more factor which can explain their nature is ruggedness of packed column as well as capillary column. Tube of packed columns is rugged because it is formed by metal; whereas capillary columns are fragile they are made up of glass.
Hence we can say there are ample of factors on the basis of which you can distinguish the two terms that are a capillary column and packed column.
